The final “T” in SMART-EST goals stands for TACTICAL. Without the right tactics, we won’t meet our goal, or at least not very efficiently. You should now have a clear vision for the future. You have set great goals using the SMART framework and additionally, you set Economic and Strategic goals. However, it’s time to create your daily/weekly/monthly tactical plan to keep you moving towards achieving your goals.
The tactics to achieve your goal may vary depending on the goal but at the very minimum they should include the following steps:
Write down the major steps/tasks that need to be completed for your goal. Decide if there are steps that need to be completed in a specific order to meet your goal. Write down the major steps/tasks and approximate completion time frames so that you stay on track! This will help you with weekly/monthly prioritization and scheduling.
Write down the first 3-4 small tasks that can be done right now and get to it! This is your short-term tactical strategy. We can all get overwhelmed with the details/tasks for a big goal, but when you break it down into the next few tasks and get them done, it will motivate you to keep going.
Create Accountability by having someone review your goal progress on a regular basis. This one is key! If you know someone is going to be asking you what you have accomplished since the last meeting; you will generally make sure you have progress to report!
These simple but effective tactics will keep you on track to reach your goals. Completing these steps ensures you set practical goals. If you cannot sketch out the tasks/milestones or decide on the next steps to take, then chances are your goal is not specific enough or perhaps is not truly attainable. Therefore, refine your goals until they meet all of the criteria for SMART-EST goals!
Congratulations, you are now ready to achieve amazing results as you start meeting your goals and driving your vision of the future!
